Roof Tear-Off Dumpster Sizing in Peoria: Get It Right the First Time
Roofing is a weight job dressed up as a volume job. Here is how to count squares, allow for pitch and hidden layers, and pick the right roll-off for a Peoria tear-off.

Every roofer in central Illinois thinks in squares. Every homeowner calling us about a tear-off thinks in square feet, and that gap is where the bad container decisions get made. A roofing square is 100 square feet of finished roof surface — the unit shingles are sold in, labour is bid in, and the only sane unit for working out how much steel you need in the driveway. Get the square count right and the rest is straightforward. Get it wrong, or forget what is hiding under the top layer, and you end up with a container you cannot legally move.
We have been dropping cans for roofers around Peoria since 2013, and the pattern is consistent: roofing is a weight job dressed up as a volume job. Here is how we size it.
Counting squares: footprint is only half the answer
Start with the building footprint, not the living area. A 1,600 square foot ranch has roughly 1,600 square feet under the roof plus overhangs; a 1,600 square foot two-storey has about 800. That alone trips people up on the older streets, where a tall narrow house with three floors of living space carries a modest roof.
Then apply pitch. The roof plane is longer than the ground it covers, and the steeper the roof the bigger the gap. The multipliers are fixed geometry:
- 4/12 — multiply footprint by about 1.05
- 6/12 — about 1.12
- 8/12 — about 1.20
- 10/12 — about 1.30
- 12/12 — about 1.41
This is exactly where Peoria's old housing stock catches people out. The Victorians, gable-heavy foursquares and steep-roofed cottages through the West Bluff, the Uplands and Moss-Bradley were not built at a modern 4/12. Plenty run 10/12 and steeper, with dormers, turrets and cross gables piled on top. A 1,100 square foot footprint on a 12/12 with two dormers is not 11 squares — it is closer to 17 or 18 once you count dormer planes, valleys and cut waste. Figure roughly one extra square per dormer.
If the crew has already measured for material, use their number — that is the figure to size the container from.
What a roof actually weighs
Shingles are dense and do not compress. Rough field numbers we use every week:
- Standard three-tab asphalt: roughly 220 to 250 pounds per square
- Architectural (dimensional) asphalt: roughly 350 to 450 pounds per square
- Heavyweight designer laminates: can push past 500
Do that arithmetic on a 25-square architectural roof and you land at 8,750 to 11,250 pounds of shingle alone — four to five and a half tons. That is before felt, nails, ridge vent, drip edge, step flashing, old pipe boots, and before anybody finds a soft spot and starts cutting out rotten decking. Half a dozen sheets of wet OSB and a run of fascia add several hundred pounds without filling much space at all.
That imbalance is the whole story with roofing: you hit the weight limit long before you fill the box.
The Peoria wrinkle: layers, shake and board sheathing
On anything built before the 1970s here, assume nothing about what is under the top course. Shingling straight over the existing roof was normal practice for decades, and Peoria has a lot of houses that went through that cycle twice. A second layer doubles the tonnage; a third triples it. Strip three layers off a 20-square roof and you are looking at six or seven tons before a single sheet of decking comes off.
Older homes go further. Strip an original roof on a pre-1940 house in Randolph-Roanoke or High Wine and you may find wood shake over spaced board sheathing. The shake comes off too, the boards often need replacing to take modern decking, and volume jumps while the weight climbs.
Then the top end. Slate and clay tile sit on some of the grander pre-1940 houses around the bluff and near Grandview Drive, and they are a different weight class entirely — slate commonly runs 700 to 1,000 pounds per square and reaches 1,500 on thick quarry stock, with clay tile in the same territory. An 18-square slate roof can exceed seven tons. Slate goes in a 10 yard dumpster or a low-filled 15, never a big box, and we need to know up front so we send the right truck.

The 15 yard and the 20 yard roll-off are the residential roofing workhorses here, and it is not close. They take a full single-layer strip on most Peoria houses, they fit a normal driveway without hanging into the street, and their walls are low enough that a crew can pitch debris in from a ladder instead of hauling it around. A 30 yard earns its place on big complex roofs and jobs with heavy decking replacement, where bulk genuinely needs the volume.
Why a 40 yard is almost never the right roofing can
We rent plenty of 40 yard containers and they are excellent for light, bulky material. Roofing is the opposite. You reach the legal weight limit with the box a third full, so you are paying for 26 yards of air. Worse, a 40 that does get filled with shingle is over legal axle weight, and an overloaded container cannot leave the property — the truck will not lift it safely, and the load would be illegal on the road under IDOT weight rules. Placement on Peoria's older grid
Where the can sits determines how fast the job goes. On the older streets driveways are short, often single-width, and barely long enough for the container plus a work truck; lots are narrow and setbacks tight. What saves those jobs is the rear alley — much of the pre-war grid still has them, and setting the can behind the house keeps the driveway clear and often puts the box closer to the tear-off side than the street ever could.
Set the container on the side you are stripping first. A crew pitching shingle straight off the roof into the box works dramatically faster than one carrying debris around the house, and over a two-day tear-off that difference is real money. Two Peoria cautions. First, the bluff streets: West Bluff and the roads climbing off Grandview Drive are steep enough that a loaded container has no business sitting on a grade, and a full roofing box is among the heaviest things we set. We will find level ground or work off the alley. Weather windows in central Illinois
Roofing here has three seasons, and each changes the container plan.
Summer. July and August heat softens shingles on the roof and asphalt drives on the ground. A loaded roll-off sitting on hot asphalt all afternoon can mark it even over boards, so we favour early-morning drops — which suits crews starting at first light anyway.
Spring. Wet shingle gains weight fast, so a can that was under limit Friday can be over it Monday after a soaking. Cover the box or pull it before a front comes through. Spring ground is soft too, and a loaded truck will rut a lawn or a soft shoulder.
Winter. Hard freeze makes asphalt brittle and dangerous to walk, and scheduling becomes a moving target. January tear-offs happen here, mostly emergency and insurance work, but plan for weather holds — ice on a bluff street is a hard stop for us.
Storm work runs on insurance time
Central Illinois does not need reminding about severe weather. The August 2020 derecho, and the hail and straight-line wind events that roll through most years, put whole neighbourhoods on the roof at once. Demand for containers spikes within days and stays high for weeks, because every claim lands on the same handful of contractors and roll-off fleets.

What rides along, and what cannot
Standard tear-off debris all goes in the same box: shingles, felt, nails, ridge vent, drip edge, step and valley flashing, pipe boots, rotten decking, fascia and soffit. Old gutter can go in too, though aluminium gutter is worth pulling aside as scrap — a house's worth is not a fortune, but it is free money and it keeps weight out of the can.
What cannot: sealant and adhesive cans with wet product in them, torches and torch cylinders, propane bottles of any size, and anything on Illinois' landfill ban list — landscape waste, electronics, tires, appliances, used oil and lead-acid batteries. Asbestos: stop and test
This one is not negotiable. Older roofing products — some felts, mastics, roof cements and certain shingle types — can contain asbestos, and so can the siding on the same house. On a pre-1980 Peoria home, if you find suspect material, stop and have it tested before it comes off the roof. We cannot accept asbestos-containing material in any container and would far rather move your date than haul a contaminated load. Illinois EPA and the Illinois Department of Public Health regulate this work, and federal NESHAP rules through the US EPA add inspection and notification duties on many jobs. Swap-outs, magnets and finishing clean
On a big or multi-layer roof, do not make one container do a two-container job. Plan the swap from the start: fill the first can, we haul it and set an empty in the same spot, and the crew never stops. Next-day swap-outs are standard, and same-day service is often possible if you call early.
Last thing, and it separates the professionals from everyone else: roll a magnet, twice. Once over the drive and lawn when the tear-off is done, and again after the container leaves, because nails ride the box and drop when it moves. Tarps under the eaves catch most of it; the magnet catches the rest.
