Why people choose the 40 yard

The rule with this size is simple and it does not bend: bulky and light only, never dense. Eight feet of side wall gives you enormous volume within the same legal payload as a 30, so the material has to be air-heavy — packaging, shelving, fixtures, office furniture, insulation, ductwork, light framing. Put concrete, brick, soil, shingle or plaster in a 40 and it goes overweight with the box a quarter full, the driver refuses the lift, and somebody spends a morning taking it back out by hand. Where it does belong is commercial and industrial work. A warehouse clear-out, a retail space stripped between tenants, a plant or shop cleaning out decades of stored fixtures, a light demolition where the structure is framing, sheeting and finish rather than masonry. Big estate jobs on large properties qualify too, when the volume is genuinely there. Access is the honest part of this conversation. A 40 needs roughly 22 feet of box on level ground, about 60 feet of straight approach, and eight feet of side height you can actually load over — which usually means a loader, a ramp or an open end rather than a man with a wheelbarrow. Will it fit?

Nothing about this box forgives a tight site. Plan on roughly 60 feet of straight approach, about 10 and a half feet of width, and well over 20 feet of overhead for the hoist — more than any other size, because the arm carries the box higher. Low limbs and service drops on the older tree-lined grid rule it out on most residential streets, and the rear alleys in the historic districts are usually too narrow. Never on a bluff grade. Protection boards go under the rails as standard.
